Aya and the Forest Lanterns

Aya was seven, and she loved the hour when the sky turned the color of ink and milk. That was when Aunt Keiko lit the lanterns along a bamboo trail between small village houses.

The villagers called them the forest lanterns. Aunt Keiko called them the kindness lanterns, because they glowed brightest whenever someone nearby spoke kindly.

But tonight, every lantern hung dark and still on its bamboo pole. Down the hill, neighbors were already setting up stalls and stringing paper cranes for the night market.

Aunt Keiko knelt and placed something smooth in Aya’s hands. It was a lantern flute that answers gentle voices: a slender bamboo flute with a tiny paper lantern tied at its tip.

“We must relight the kindness lanterns before the night market opens,” said Aunt Keiko. “Will you help me, little one?” Aya held the flute as carefully as an egg and nodded.
